About Umma

Umma is a supernatural horror movie about a single mother, Amanda (Sandra Oh), who live with her daughter, Chris (Fivel Stewart), on an isolated farm. They raise bees and chickens, sell honey and live without modern technology. Amanda is “allergic” to electronics and electricity.

After being homeschooled, Chris is anxious to leave the farm and start college. But Amanda is upset with the idea and wants her to stay on the farm. Soon Amanda receives the cremated ashes of her recently deceased mother from her uncle. She calls her estranged mother, Umma.

The visit brings up memories of her past when her and Umma immigrated from Korea. Umma raised Amanda alone. Umma used electronics to electrically shock Amanda as punishment.

As an adult, Amanda decides to form a deep relationship with her daughter. Chris grows up thinking her mother is allergic to electricity accepting their secluded life.

This has made Amanda and Chris oddities in the small town. A local shopkeeper, Danny (Dermot Mulroney), unfazed by her allergy, help Amanda turn their honey-making business into a success. He also helps to keep them safe.

When Amanda found out that her “allergy” was fabricated , she ties with Umma and her Korean heritage. With her mother gone, Amanda regrets not teaching Chris about her Korean language and culture.

Soon after the ashes arrive, a spirit appears. The entity uses Amanda’s anger about Chris wanting to leave for college to grow stronger. It is intent on claiming Amanda’s body as its own. Amanda becomes paranoid and fears that she is becoming her mother. When the possession of Amanda fails, the spirit tries to possess Chris. Amanda buries the ashes to defeat the spirit.

Not understanding, Chris tries to stop her mother when she finds her performing the Jesa wearing a mask and hanbok. Then she learns the truth of her heritage and her mother’s allergy. Now, they must work together to destroy the evil spirit.
