Conversations with a Killer: The John Wayne Gacy Tapes is similar to another Netflix documentary, Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes. It’s the second installment of an ongoing series. This new series focuses on John Wayne Gacy. He sexually assaulted and murdered at least thirty-three young man and boys between 1972 and 1976.
Gacy was an aspiring politician and beloved local contractor. He was most known as “Pogo the Clown,” a part-time clown for hire. As a clown Gacy would entertain and perform at many children’t hospitals and events. Many of his victims were either gay prostitutes or young men who worked for him at his construction company. He even was married twice and had kids.
The majority of his victims were found buried under his house in the suburbs of Chicago. Fifty years later, DNA scientists are still trying to identify all of his victims. The series is very detailed about the hunt and investigation. In the final episode, we hear about the trial and his final moments. Much of the series feature videos, photos and recordings between Gacy and his defense team. There are also interviews from people who new him, one was one of his survivors. It gives us a fresh perspective on his mindset and a deeper understand on how he operated for so long.
