Sonic the Hedgehog is based on the global blockbuster video game franchise from Sega of the same name. The movie tells a story of the speediest hedgehog as he embraces his new home on Earth. In this live-action adventure comedy, Sonic (Ben Schwartz) and his best friend Tom (James Marsden) team up to defend the plant from the evil genius Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey).
Sonic lives in the small town of Green Hills, Montana in hiding after being forced out of his original dimension, Mobius, because he used his power of super speed. After causing a blackout, Sonic attracts the attention of Dr. Robotnik. On the run, he meets and becomes friends with a local police officer, Tom Wachowski. Together they try to stop Dr. Robotnik’s plan for world domination.
The film was released on February 14, 2020 by Paramount Pictures.

About Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic is an anthropomorphic blue hedgehog who can run at supersonic speeds and curl into a ball, primarily to attack his enemies. He is best known as a video game character and icon in Sega. He was release in 1991 to rival Nintendo’s flagship character, Mario. Sonic was redesigned in 1998 with a more mature look designed to appeal to older players.
In the video game, Sonic must race through levels, collecting power-up rings while avoiding obstacles and enemies. While in the movie, instead of rings, he uses the power grid and blacks out the whole city.
Several animated series featuring Sonic were created. The first to premiere was Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog 1993 with Sonic and his friend Tails opposing Dr. Robotnik and his robots on the planet Mobius. The latest series will air on Netflix in 2022 titled Sonic Prime with many shows in between.
UPDATE: The title of the sequel was released in February 2021 as Sonic the Hedgehog 2. It is set to be released in theaters on April 8, 2022.
