Missing Trailer
With the success of the 2018 movie comes the next installment of the Searching franchise, Missing. Sony Pictures recently released the Missing trailer and it looks every bit as good as its predecessor.
Searching gained notoriety for its unique perspective. The movie is about a widower father (John Cho, Star Trek) searching for his missing daughter. While not quite a found footage film, the movie is told entirely through webcam, cameras, smartphones and TV. The director’s iPhone was even used to film some scenes. Using social media, he uses every resource available to try and find his daughter. As he frantically searches, you can see the anguish on his face on the webcam. With a budget of only $800,000, the movie grossed over $75 million.
As we can see from the trailer, Missing will be using some of the same techniques. While it may not be a sequel, I would highly suggest watching Searching. The plot twist alone, is worth it. None of the characters in Searching will appear in Missing. Instead of a father, daughter duo, Missing follows a mother and daughter.
What is Missing About?
Missing is about a close-nit mother and daughter played by Nia Long and Storm Reid. When her mother, Grace (Nia Long, The Best Man), doesn’t show up at the airport, June (Storm Reid, Euphoria) grows worried. While on vacation in Columbia with her boyfriend, Kevin (Ken Leung, Old), Grace has gone missing. Even though she is thousands of miles away in Los Angeles, she must find her mother. For that reason, she her search is hindered by international red tape.
Using the resources at her disposal, June continues her search for answers. From Google search, Google Maps and social media websites as her tools, her pursuit of the truth leaves more questions that answers. As a result, June begins to wonder if she actually knew her mother at all.
As we can see from the trailer, the movie captures the magic of what made Searching so popular. The use of the webcam and other technologies, coveys the emotion the character is feeling real time. We will be taken on a journey from beginning to end discovering along with June.
We’ve seen the plot of a parent searching for a child many times in movies before. The dynamic of a child looking for a parent is a unique dynamic. It further drives anticipation for the film. We will see is lightening will strike twice with this franchise. Expect to see Missing in theaters on January 20, 2023. Further, you can get in on the action by texting “MISSING” to (310) 634-1918. In the meantime, if you haven’t seen it, watch Searching on demand.
