Moonfall is a sci-fi disaster movie written, directed and produced by Roland Emmerich. Emmerich is a master at disaster movies. His resume includes Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow, 2012 and Independence Day: Resurgence.
Moonfall follows two former astronauts along with a conspiracy theorist who discover the truth about the moon. In 2011, Brian Harper (Patrick Wilson) and Jocinda Fowler (Halle Berry) are apart of a team to repair a satellite. While at the Space Shuttle, a mysterious black swarm appears killing the other crew member. Fowler was incapacitated so Henry was the only one to witness the swarm.
Initially, Harper was held as a hero. He shares his experience about the swarm. But when Fowler was unable to corroborate his story, Harper was fired.
Now it’s 2021, Harper is struggling and occasionally acts as a kids tour guide at the Griffith Observatory to pay his bills. There he meets K.C. Houseman (John Bradley). Houseman is a conspiracy theorist who believes the Moon is an artificial megastructure and is headed towards Earth. After using his time to secretly use a research telescope, he unsuccessfully tries to warn NASA about the Moon veering closer to Earth.
Houseman ambushes Harper at the observatory to share his findings. Initially Harper dismisses him and Houseman goes public. At the same time, NASA discovers the Moons trajectory and sends out a crew to investigate. The vessel shows footage of the same black swarm Harper mentioned in his reports. The swarm killed three crew members after they drop a probe.
As the Moon falls closer to Earth, it causes disasters such as tsunamis, gravitational abnormalities and atmospheric dissipation. Now the deputy director of NASA, discovers the truth behind the moon. Her mission is to return the Moon to its original orbit.
NASA learns that the problem with the Moon has ben triggered by electronic devices. The only way to fix it is to use an EMP (Electro-Magnetic Pulse). They must use the retired Space Shuttle Endeavor to fly to the Moon.
In comes Harper. He is one of the few pilots that can fly the space shuttle. He, Houseman and Fowler, set off to the Moon to save the human race.
