About Season 2 of A Very British Scandal

A Very British Scandal is an anthology series about Britain’s scandalous elite for Prime Video. The first season concentrated on the true story of Jeremy Thorpe. He was the first British politician to stand trial for conspiracy to murder.

The three-episode second season focuses on the divorce of the Duke and Duchess of Argyll. It was one of the most notorious, extraordinary and brutal legal cases of the 20th century.

Margaret Campbell (Claire Foy) and Ian Campbell (Paul Bettany) were married in 1951. Margaret was famed for her charisma, beauty and style. On the other hand, the Duke was know to be addicted to alcohol, gambling and prescription drugs. He was described as being physically violent and emotionally cruel by this first two wives.

The Duke suspected his wife was cheating while in New York. He enlisted the help of a locksmith to break open a cupboard in their Mayfair home. The evidence discovered resulted in the 1963 divorce case.

The divorce dominated the front pages featuring accusations of forgery, theft, violence, drug-taking secret recordings, bribery and an explicit Polaroid pictures of Margaret.

I had wealth, I had good looks. As a young woman I had been constantly photographed, written about, flattered, admired, included in the Ten Best-Dressed Women in the World list, and mention by Cole Porter in the words of his hot song “You’re on Top”. The top was what I was supposed to be. I had become a duchess and mistress of a historic castle.

A Very British Scandal explores the social and political climate of postwar Britain. It looks at the attitudes towards women and if institutional misogyny was widespread at the time. Throughout the ordeal, Margaret held her head high with bravery and resilience. She refused to go quietly as we she betrayed by her friends and publicly shamed by society.
