In December, the 1920s Hollywood will come back in style. Paramount Pictures recently released the trailer for Babylon coming to theaters Christmas Day. Written and directed by Damien Chazelle, the star studded cast is sure to get movie-goers to theaters this holiday season. Chazelle is known for his Academy Award winning movies Whiplash, La La Land and First Man.
Babylon is an epic about the rise and fall of multiple ambitious characters during an era of outrageous excess and opulence. It centers around six main characters; Jack Conrad, Manny Torres, Nellie LaRoy, Lady Fay Zhu, Eliner St. John and Sidney Palmer.
As we can see from the Babylon trailer, the movie poised to make a big splash. It is described as The Great Gatsby on steroids. The movie hits limited theaters on December 25, 2022, with a wider release in January 2023.
Jack Conrad played by Brad Pitt is a fictional character based on John Gilbert and Clark Gable. He was a silent movie star in the 1920s who struggled to make the transition from silent films to talkies.
Manny Torres played by Diego Calva is a young Mexican immigrant who works as an assistant. But he has dreams of becoming a Hollywood actor.
Margot Robbie will play Nellie LaRoy. Her character is inspired by Clara Bow who thrived during the onset of talkies.
Lady Fay Zhu will play Li Jun Li. Her character is loosely based on Anna May Wong. Wong is considered to be the first Chinese American Hollywood movie star.
Sidney Palmer‘s character looks to be inspired by Jazz musician Louis Armstrong. The character will be played by Jovan Adepo.
Jean Smart is set to play Eliner St. John. She is believed to be a Hollywood journalist and critic who can make for break a career.
Rounding out the cast is Tobey Maguire as James McKay, Katherine Waterston, Olivia Wilde and Flea.
