Candy is a new series on Hulu based on the true story of Candace “Candy” Montgomery (Jessica Biel). She is the perfect housewife, mother, churchgoer and friend. But the pressures to be perfect can drive people to do strange things.

The series details the events in Wylie, Texas in 1980 when Candy murdered her best friend with an axe after having an affair with her husband.

Candy is a 30 year-old woman who kept a low profile life. She got married, had two children, went to church and helped out with the neighbors. She took care of the kids while her husband work as an engineer at Texas Instruments.

Her best friend, Betty Gore, attended the same women’s groups and had kids who were best friends with her kids. They had a falling out at a church volleyball game in the summer of 1978 where Candy ran into some trouble.

Candy stayed in contact with Betty’s husband, Alan Gore, that soon turned into an affair. After the birth of his second child, Alan and Candy decided to end the affair.

Later that year, while Alan was away on business, Betty’s daughter Alisa had a sleepover with Candy’s daughter, Jenny. Candy offered to help Betty out by taking Alisa to swim lessons.

One day, Alisa left her swimsuit at home. When Candy picked up her swimsuit, she was confronted by Betty about the affair with her husband. We don’t know the full details, but Candy fell into a dissociative state, picked up an axe and killed Betty. She swung the axe 41 times.

After being discovered by a neighbor, the police came and the investigation began. The trial began quickly after. Candy pled guilty to the murder, but contested the charges on grounds of self defense. She said Betty came at her with the axe. She was acquitted and set free.

The limited series will premiere with one episode on Monday, May 9, 2022. A new episode will be released each day for five days though Friday, May 13, 2022.
