Guillermo del Toro reimagines the classic Italian tale of Pinocchio in a stop-motion musical adventure. The movie follows the mischievous adventures of Pinocchio in his pursuit to to find his place in the world and become a real boy.
The director has the imagination to bring the magical to life. It’s evident in his films such as Pan’s Labyrinth, Nightmare Alley and Crimson Peak. He recently Oscars for The Shape of Water for Best Director and Best Picture.
The Story of Pinocchio
Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio is based on the novel The Adventures of Pinocchio by Italian writer Carlo Collodi. Geppetto was a woodcarver who lived in a Tuscan village. He didn’t have any children so he carved a wooden puppet in hopes that he would become a boy.
A piece of wood Pinocchio was carved from is animated which allows him to move independently.
His most prominent feature is his short nose which grows longer when he lies. In the original tale, Collodi describes him as a rascal. Often surrounded by bad company, Pinocchio finds himself in trouble a lot.
In the story as well as other adaptations, Pinocchio must go through a metamorphosis. He promises to change his ways so he can become a real boy. The story has been adapted several times. Most memorable is Disney’s adaptation Pinocchio.
