About Smother

Smother is an Irish thriller drama written by Kate O’Riordan (The Spanish Princess writer) and developed for BBC Studios. The series is set in small town on the coast of County Clare. The main character, Val Ahern, is a devoted mother and is determined to protect her family at all costs. This is especially true for her three daughters, Jenny, Anna and Grace.

When Val’s husband, Denis, is found dead at the foot of a cliff after a family party, Val begins to investigate. She interrogates everyone at the party to get details of how events unfolded the night before to see who may be responsible.

Val explores her husband’s relationships with family members. As she digs deeper, she learns about her family’s secrets. The more she learns, the more she realizes how her late husband’s controlling, manipulating behavior had an effect on each family member.

The season finale of season one ends with the identity of the perpetrator. Season two begins with the family still picking up the pieces after Denis’s death and the cover up that followed. Val’s world is uprooted again when a stranger turns up on her doorstep.

He introduces himself as Finn, Denis’ estranged son. His existence is an unwelcome surprise that will bring more twists and turns in the new season.
