About The Essex Serpent

The Essex Serpent is a new drama based on the Sarah Perry novel of the same name. It was written by Anna Symon and directed by Clio Barnard for Apple TV+.

One of the main characters is Cora Seaborne (Claire Dames). She is a naturalist whoo has a fixation with sea serpents. A recent widow, she has spare time to comb through newspaper clippings, books and maps to learn about sea serpents.

She hears rumors about a serpent in a small village in Essex. Her and her son board a train from London to investigate the rumors. When she arrives, the town is in fear when a child goes missing. They believe the serpent is a bad omen from God.

One of the first people Cora meets is Will Ransome (Tim Hiddleston). He is the town’s parish vicar and tries his best to calm the town. Unlike Cora, Will has more conservative, faith-based beliefs. They bond while researching the origins of the Essex serpent.

The pair soon find themselves in the center of a science vs faith debate. Cora is a woman of science and thinks the serpent may be in the town’s shallow waters. Will is a man of faith and doesn’t believe that such a creature exists.

Unfortunately for Cora, things become complicated when a local girl turns up dead. Because she is enthusiastic about finding the serpent, the town believes she attracted the serpent.
