The Northman is a story is based on the Scandinavian legend that inspired Shakespeare’s Hamlet told through the eyes of Prince Amleth (Alex Skarsgård). In 895, King Aurvandil (Ethan Hawke) returns to his kingdom from his conquests overseas. He reunites with his family; his wife Queen Gudrun (Nicole Kidman) and his son Prince Amleth.
After returning from battle injured, the king hands the reign over to his son Prince Amleth. The following day, his father is ambushed and murdered. Amleth’s uncle, Fjölnir (Claes Bang) deals the final blow. Witnessing the murder, Fjölnir tries to kill Amleth. But Amleth escapes seeing his mother being captured by his uncle.
Amleth is found by a band of Vikings and raised as a berserker. He vows to take revenge on Fjölnir for murdering his father and capturing his mother. Amleth visits a Seeress that foretells Amleth will soon have the opportunity to take his revenge. Amleth sets out to follow his plan for vengeance.
