The Time Traveler’s Wife is based on the novel of the same name by Audrey Niffenegger. The series follows the magical love story between Clare (Rose Leslie) and Henry (Theo James) complicated by time travel.

Henry has an unusual genetic disorder. The disorder causes him to leap through time at sudden intervals. This causes him to experience his romance with Clare out of order. As he leaps in the past and future, Henry re-examines past traumas and tries to outrun the forces chasing him. With each occurrence, Clare must cope with frequent disappearances.

The Time Traveler’s Wife trailer shows Henry leaping through time with glimpses of his and Clare’s relationship. It’s a snippet of what the six episode series has to offer. The series premieres on HBO Max on May 15, 2022.

It’s the second adaptation of Niffenegger’s book. In 2009, a film directed by Robert Schwentke was released in theaters. It starred Rachel McAdams as Clare and Eric Bana as Henry. The film received mixed reviews from critics.

This is a story of loss but it’s not a tragedy. It’s about a time traveler but it’s not science fiction. Despite Clare and Henry’s time scrambled relationship, this is the tale of a grand, ordinary love – but not necessarily in that order. This is a dream project for me. I have always loved Audrey Niffenegger’s extraordinary, moving novel and it has inspired me many times, so to be adapting it for television is the thrill of a lifetime.

The show was written and executive produced by Steven Moffat and directed by David Nutter. Other characters include; Gomez (Desmine Borges), Clare’s best friend and Charisse (Natasha Lopez), Clare’s roommate.
