Remember the days of walking through the mall and hearing pulsing beats echoing from a store with tons of teenagers. As you walk past, you see bare chests and six packs plastered all over the walls. That has Abercrombie & Fitch.
I remember the days of taking my teenage daughter to the mall. The store that her and her friends always shopped at was Abercrombie & Fitch. I even on occasion shopped at the store in the mid to late 90s. It was the place where the many teenagers felt like the cool kids. The retailer was known for their all American image and must-have clothing for the millennium.
The documentary features interviews from former employees, executives and models. They share how the retailer’s exclusionary marketing practices and discriminatory hiring practices. Former store managers and sales staff describe that all store employees must be “young, thin and white”. Discriminatory practices like this is what eventually lead to their downfall.
In the early 2000s, the retailer was sued for discrimination against African Americans, Asian Americans and other minority applicants. With the onset of stores like Forever 21, teen shopping habits changed. They wanted cheaper clothing. Sales began to sump and store began closing. Most of their products are sold online now.
